Consumers might not be aware of the prevalence of scam movers in the industry today. But a two day police round up of sub standard movers in a Midwest town, showed just how rife the practice really is.
The police in one western town decided it was time to put their foot down and they conducted an undercover sting. The results of the sting shockingly demonstrated just how prevalent sub-standard moving practices have become.
The law enforcement officials posed as a family in need of moving services. They hired scores of movers who were advertising their services on Craig’s list. The date was set for the move, only when the trucks showed up, they were escorted around the corner by members of the police department and subjected to an inspectionShockingly, in two days of the police inspection, not one moving company passed standards. The most surprising resuls was that a number of the trucks were deemed so unsafe that they were prohibited from being driven, and had to be towed away. All of the other trucks had various safety violations, as well as substandard moving equipment. Another shocking finding was that many of the companies were making moves without a license. At the end of the second day, in a television interview, the director of the police sting summed it up by saying that if he were moving, he wouldn’t use any of the companies that showed up during the two days of the sting.
The findings of the sting are a harsh wake up call to American consumers who frequently shop on Carig’s list and other Internet sites for second line movers, hoping they cn thereby save a few bucks on their move. Number one, what happens if you move with a company that has lost their license and you don’t know about it. You can hope that the move will turn out all right. But the truth is that these companies are the very ones that are least likely to treat your belongings properly. And yet, if there is any damage or any loss of property during the relocation, you will have no chance of recovering damages from an insurance company, because a move with an unlicensed company is not covered by insurance.
Substandard trucks are frequently not weatherproof. Consumers, being moved by a substandard truck are frequently disappointed to find their belongings have been damaged by snow, rain or freezing temperatures. On a cynical note, the prevalence of the substandard trucks may actually explain why so many second rate companies, make the excuse that the delivery is delayed due to a broken down truck. On occasion this may be more than an excuse.
