Strictly Speaking, all exercises for physical improvement are corrective. That is, to correct a condition of physical weakness, inferiority, or to raise the general standard of health to a more satisfactory level. Generally, however, corrective exercise implies the use of special movements to correct spinal curvatures, chest deformities, muscle imbalance, and similar conditions.
Many physical deficiencies do not need special corrective movements to be overcome. The general developmental exercises outlined in the suggested programs will overcome many difficulties. Yet, there are certain ones that need the application of special exercises or special groupings of exercises to hasten their improvement.
If a case is severe, it should be placed in the hands of a qualified orthopaedist, and his advice should be followed in regard to exercise and other corrective measures.
The following information is given to aid in the correction of some of the more general deficiencies encountered, especially in children.
Flat Chest
The flat chest is usually found in the light boned body type. His ribs incline downward too much and the chest is not as deep in proportion to width as it should be.
All overhead movements of the arms react favorably with this condition, but most especially the Pull Over, the Lateral Raise, and the Deep Knee Bend exercises.
The first two, to stretch the rib box with the external muscle pulls, and the knee bends to place strong demands upon the lungs which will further aid in improving the chest walls. When these motions are used together, it is not unusual for a boy to increase the size of his normal chest two to four inches in six weeks’ time. Other movements assist in over-
coining the flat chested condition, but the most important are those listed above.
Round Shoulders
Round shoulders are usually found in the light boned body type, especially if he is tall.
This is not so much a condition of shoulder difficulty as it is an accentuated curve of the spine in the thoracic region.
The same exercises that overcome the flat chested condition are also beneficial for round shoulders. In addition it is helpful to strengthen all the muscles of the upper back. Those having a strong influence on those muscles are the Press from Behind the Neck, The Rowing Exercise, the Upright Rowing Exercise, the Flying Exercise, and the Stiff Legged Stretch.
is a great satisfaction to see the improvement in this condi¬tion in the growing child from the above exercises. It is always a surprise to the adult to find himself straighter and a little taller as improvement is made.
SPINAL CURVATURES
There are three conditions of spinal curvatures to be considered.
Too great a curve in the upper back or chest area, which is mentioned in the remarks on round shoulders.
Too great a curve in the lower back, which causes protrusion of the abdomen and unusual strain on the lower back muscles and ligaments.
Any curve to the side from the straight line viewed from the back. Accompanying this lateral curve will be noted a difference
