The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Larry Johnson on Monday, this just coming weeks after Johnson’s insulting comments towards the Chiefs fans, coaches, and management. Johnson was only 75 yards shy of breaking the Chiefs all-time rushing record held by Priest Holmes. Johnson’s agent told the Associated Press that right now Johnson feels regretful and excited all in one.
Larry Johnson has been one of the best running backs in the NFL; a 2003 No.1 draft choice, Johnson put up back to back 1700+ rushing yard seasons in 05, and 06, and also had a 20 touchdown season in 2005. Johnson had been suspended by the Chiefs for the past 2 weeks for his comments that were posted on his twitter account, and was later fined $315,000. His comments caused fans to start an online petition begging the Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli to cut him from the team so that he would have no chance at breaking the all-time rushing record…I guess the fans got what they wanted. Last season former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards benched Johnson 3 games for violating team rules, NFL’s commissioner Goodell would then suspended him another game for violating league policies.
Johnson was later sentenced to 2 months probation for pleading guilty to disturbing the peace, and for assaulting a women at a Kansas City nightclub. Larry hasn’t been the same hard-nose running back that he used to be, in 2006 he had a record setting season with 416 rushing attempts and finished with the teams single season rushing record at 1,789. In 7 games this season Johnson has rushed for 358 yards with 0 touchdowns, which is just another bad stat for this (1-7) Chiefs team. You can bet Johnson will be picked up by another NFL team in the very soon future.
The Seahawks could be one possible team to pick Johnson up, with a sinking running game, Johnson could maybe fit in with Seattle. The Colts could be another team that could use Johnson, although with the dual running backs of Addai and Brown, they might not be so eager to land Larry Johnson, but if there are teams out there that feel he can regain that quickness and power he once possessed, Johnson will be picked up fairly quick. Last season Johnson had one of his lowest years, rushing for 559 yards and only 3 touchdowns, mainly due to not being in good shape and having a foot injury throughout the season.
Larry Johnson used to be a great fantasy running back, putting up huge numbers in games and having consecutive multiple touchdown games, but now Johnson has gone down on that list and it will be a true test to see if the 30 year old can show the people what he once had.
