You’ve heard, I know, in dozens of books and magazine articles and radio talks, about the subconscious. And how you can make your subconscious work for you and with you. I wish I had space here to give you a whole course on psychology—a sort of refresher course, for I’m sure that is all you need. I feel, though, if you under-
stand what I’ve already said so far, that what I can tell you here will be enough to help you think yourself thin.

You realize, I know, that the thinking mind is the conscious mind. The subconscious does not think, psychologists say, but remembers and does what it is told. It is powerful—supposedly far more powerful than our thinking, awake mind. It is supposed to be like the submerged part of a glacier—hundreds of feet under the water for every ten feet or so above the surface. The subconscious is there, working, whether we are awake or asleep. The subconscious has a remarkable memory—it is supposed to retain everything that has ever happened to us. So it is the subconscious that can help or hold us back in our fight to become our better selves.

We must make our subconscious work for us as we think ourselves thin. Only in that way can we become thin permanently and with the right results. Now, I don’t mean that we can’t get thin without the help of the subconscious—for of course we can. A person on a starvation diet or a depleted diet will lose weight, even if he doesn’t want to lose weight, either consciously or subconsciously. People in concentration camps become thin because they didn’t get enough to eat. Simple as that. But it was also because they were miserably unhappy, so, in a way, the subconscious did have something to do with it. Any diet too low for sustenance will make you thin. That is a physiological fact. You actually do not need the subconscious to get thin I We all know dozens of people who have lost weight on a too-low diet without help from the subconscious at all.

Though, at that, usually those diets were helped a bit by the subconscious. We thought or said, “These diets will reduce,’’ so the subconscious received the knowledge —and benefited by it. But the subconscious probably didn’t do enough of the work!

On the other hand, I don’t believe that you can possibly reduce only by thought—by letting your subconscious take over, without help from diet and exercise. You’re fat undoubtedly because your mind and body both helped make you fat. I’ve tried to show you that. So, only by combining mind and body in the most sensible and scientific way can you get thin easily and improve your health and appearance at the same time. And once you’ve reached your right weight, stay thin and well.

If you have any organic disease—any illness of any kind—you should consult you physician. I’m not a physician or a magician. I can’t cure serious ills. I wish I could. But I can promise you that I can help you reduce your weight by thought, if you’ll follow the thought by prescribed action. First, an understanding of what I’m trying to tell you. Second, a visit to your own physician for a thorough check-up. Third, a study food tables. Fourth, comparing your usual diet with the tables, to discover how your diet has been wrong. Fifth, an understanding of how your mind and body work together to help you grow thin and stay thin. Sixth, the finding of a right diet for you. Seventh, the finding of right exercises for you. Eighth, a survey, for you, of the whole situation concerning you and thinking yourself thin. Of course, on the side, I hope you’ll learn a lot more. But these are the basic things that you must do, if you’re to get and stay slender by thinking yourself thin. If you’ll think it over, now, I know you’ll realize how far you’ve gone, already.

Thinking yourself thin has been recognized by most diet experts, even if they’ve never exactly put it in that form. All books on reducing use some form of psychology—with their diet and exercise advice. Individuals, too, have found this the best method, even if they’ve stumbled upon it without realizing its value.

Denise Darcel, the spectacular-looking French star, said to me in her delightfully accented English,” I made up my mind to get thin. I said, ‘I will not be fat! I am not fat!’ But I was fat. I weighed over 150. Too much for me. So I say, ‘What would I do if I were not fat?’ I say, ‘Once I am thin, I will be sensible not to be fat again.’ So I do that. I pretend I am already thin. I eat and drink in moderation—what I would eat and drink if I weigh the right amount. So—I begin to lose. And I keep on thinking how I would live once I got thin. And I live that way. Always. All the time. Now I weigh 115 —just right for me. And I will not let myself gain. I keep on thinking I am thin and must not gain a single pound.”
